As part of an exceptional renovation project of the Louvre Museum, architects and developers have completely redesigned rooms dedicated to showcasing decorative art objects dating from the reign of Louis XIV to the French Revolution. This department is situated on the first floor of the Sully wing and the northern part of Cour Carrée of the Louvre Museum. These collections offer a broad perspective on interior decoration, featuring works mainly of French origin produced by leading manufacturers or independent artisans, along with others handled by fine art merchants of these periods.
Jacques Garcia, scenographer in charge of the project and Michel Goutal, senior historical monument architect at the Palais du Louvre, wanted to give the rooms' new decorative lighting the true colour rendition and brightness of 'candlelight' interior natural light used during this era. To achieve the desired effect, they selected the Chroma-Q® Color Block 2 Plus Nano™ LED system - a compact, single cell version of the brand's popular Color Block 2 Plus™ premium performance lighting fixture.
Utilising the same LED engine technology as found in the Color Block 2 Plus fixture, the 'Nano' version features a homogenised output, RGBA full colour-mixing palette and a high CRI of 90 - making it capable of creating a wide spectrum of colours, from subtle pastels to vibrant bolds, and highly accurate emulation of tungsten fixtures. In addition, the unit's high colour accuracy is complemented by theatrical grade dimming.
After many extensive tests and field trials, the Color Block 2 Plus Nano fixture's very compact design, energy-efficient LED power consumption, accurate 'orange candlelight' colour rendition and simple DMX control convinced the project team that it was the ideal solution.
Chroma-Q made small modifications to the fixture to meet the specific needs of the installation, including modifying the unit's mounting bracket.
The Louvre Museum installation features 840 Color Block 2 Plus Nano units. 210 Nano Fan Out Boxes each distribute power to four fixtures, and are connected to 18 Chroma-Q PSU30 power supplies.
The lighting system was installed by French construction company, Spie Batignolles (Fontelec), to illuminate a total of 27 rooms in the Museum.
Chroma-Q French dealer, ESL supplied the Color Block 2 Plus Nano LED system and all associated equipment to the Louvre Museum. The fixtures' lighting state was pre-programmed on a Jands Vista control system and then recalled utilising the 'look store' feature on the Chroma-Q PSU30 power supplies.
ESL staff carried out all tests, on site trials, technical monitoring and finally the commissioning of the lighting system. The new museum wing dedicated to decorative art objects was opened to the public on 6th June 2014.
Formerly a royal palace, the Louvre Museum has embraced the history of France for eight centuries. Intended as a universal museum since its inception in 1793, its collections - among the finest in the world - span several thousands of years and a territory that extends from America to the confines of Asia. Divided among eight departments, these collections feature works admired throughout the globe, including the Mona Lisa, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and the Venus de Milo. With nearly ten million visitors in 2012, the Louvre is the world’s most visited museum.
