Chroma-Q Showcase Event Provides Unique Perspectives on Lighting Design from Award-Winning Guest Speakers

March 21, 2017 11:18

UK - Delegates thoroughly enjoyed the recent Chroma-Q showcase event featuring award-winning guest speakers, Cinematographer, Phil Méheux BSC and Television Lighting Designer, Gurdip Mahal.

The unique event, which was held at Heatherden Hall within the grounds of the iconic Pinewood Studios, was attended by over 70 practitioners from the industry. Delegates included members from the BSC, STLD and ALD, and ranged from Cinematographers and designers to technical crew and students.

The event provided a unique showcase for the work, careers and technical styles of these leading experts from the worlds of film and television lighting design.

The evening kicked off with a fascinating hour-long insight into the work of Cinematographer, Phil Méheux BSC, who is recognised world-wide for his outstanding collaborations and cinematography skills on such iconic motion pictures as Scum, The Long Good Friday, The Fourth Protocol, Goldeneye, The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment, Casino Royale and Edge of Darkness, amongst many others.

Phil was interviewed by fellow leading Cinematographer, Oliver Stapleton BSC. The fascinating discussion included insights into Phil's progression from a camera man at the BBC to becoming a freelance feature-films Cinematographer working his way up to some of Hollywood's biggest budget films - including James Bond. Phil also talked about the art of good lighting to enhance a performance or story; the evolution of technology and its ability to enhance creativity; and his long working relationships with a number of leading filmmakers and crew.

After a short intermission, the second part of the evening featured another engaging hour-long interview with Television Lighting Designer, Gurdip Mahal. One of the world's leading talents in television and large-scale events lighting design, yet still very much a young, up and coming talent, Gurdip's many TV credits include The Voice, MTV Awards and BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He's also collaborated on projects with high-profile music artists including U2, Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Muse.

Gurdip was interviewed by formerly BBC / Sky and now freelance Lighting Director, Iain Davidson. The highly engaging discussion included Gurdip's approach to lighting live Saturday night entertainment shows such as The Voice; how the role of the lighting dept. on these shows has evolved to include overseeing the video content; and looking at lighting, LEDs and video as all parts of the overall stage look used to add dramatic effect.

Gurdip also revealed how he picks technology according to the type of show, so he prefers using LED fixtures such as the Chroma-Q® Space Force™ for live TV shows and other productions where reliability is key. He also thinks that making mistakes aids learning.

The event also provided a showcase for the very latest premium performance LED lighting solutions from Chroma-Q, whose products have been adopted by some of the leading practitioners in the international film, TV and entertainment sectors. In an adjacent 'black box' room, attendees were given the chance to see demonstrations of the award-winning Space Force™ variable white soft source; the new, multi-award-winning Color Force II™ battens range; the award-winning Inspire™ colour-changing LED house light, and the new Color One 100X™ LED PAR.

Chroma-Q Global Brand Manager, John Fuller commented: “Today's talks have been really informative and thought-provoking.
