Chroma-Q® Color Block 2 Lighting Is on the Ball at British Grand Prix

Once again, Chroma-Q® LED fixtures brought the stunning Clubhouse of the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) at Silverstone racing circuit to life with a temporary lighting installation for their annual British Grand Prix Ball.

The BRDC Ball is a legendary event. Held in a luxury marquee erected adjacent to the Members’ Clubhouse on the Saturday evening of the 2009 Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix weekend, it has always attracted the crème of the membership, including leading GP drivers and motorsport stars past and present.

Personalities from the motor racing fraternity, including Jenson Button, Jodie Scheckter and David Coulthard appeared on stage to talk about their experiences to the BBC’s and ex-Radio Caroline’s Jonny Walker.

A.C. Special Projects Ltd., a sister company of BRDC Rising Stars Programme Patron, A.C. Entertainment Technologies Ltd., provided the Clubhouse’s temporary architectural lighting installation for a second year. The scheme carried a similar theme to last year, with vivid colour washes onto the roof level terrace canopy extending down the first floor and out to the garden, where a number of the trees were lit.

For the 1st floor level, which was turned into a dynamic Casino environment for the evening, the new Chroma-Q Color Block 2™ LED fixture was specified to provide effects uplighting around the room perimeter. Featuring advanced second generation LED technology, the fixture’s beam optics have a soft asymmetrical quality carefully crafted to give an immediate perfect colour blend for uplighting surfaces, yet retain a soft Fresnel-like edge for direct illumination. In addition, the Color Block 2 unit’s 530 lumens output is bright enough to uplight a surface in excess of 6m, making it the ideal choice for this type of  application.

In addition to the Color Block 2, Chroma-Q Color Punch™ LED fixtures were specified to light the roof level terrace canopy. With the new 10° fixture version adding additional throw to the array of 22° Color Punch units used, it was possible to locate the fixture well out of the public areas and still illuminate the roof canopy and trees. The product features a powerful 1250 lumen output in a compact, IP65 housing, providing a bright and even light coverage where discreet installation is required.

Control of all Chroma-Q fixtures was provided by a Jands Vista PC-based lighting system running off a laptop, that was programmed to playback dramatic colour changing fades.

In addition, A.C. Special Projects installed subtle lighting to illuminate a number of vintage racing cars that were on display, as well as the recent Le Mans 24 Hour GT1 series Aston Martin LMP1 car.

Peter Keiderling, Managing Director of A.C. Special Projects, commented: “I was really impressed with this latest generation of Chroma-Q LED fixtures. Their improved light outputs and beam optics made it quick and easy to achieve stunning results in the limited two-hour window we had to set up the lighting. The Color Block 2 units gave a fantastic even wash onto the ceiling, with exceptional colour rendering. They are ideal for providing a theatrical element to architectural lighting, as well as their obvious performance lighting applications.”
